As you might find out I started my career back at Microsoft Surface, as a Surface BG Product Marketing Manager in Taiwan. Luckily, I can have my career in the same company, then go both vertically and horizontally in a business function.

My official onboard date is July 1st, however, I started transition earlier this June, also due to COVID, I haven't get back to the office in Taipei for a couple of months. EVERYTHING IS ONLINE!

Mostly, the functions and daily works are similar to what I did as a product marketing Intern, but there are few differences compared between Full Time and Internship.

💡 Ownership and Responsibilities

As a manager, it is like the hub between interns, colleagues, segments, partners, clients, and product lead. Which the majority of the working hours are handling communications and management on projects.

For example, while I was an intern, I just need to focus on one project or a single product, but now I am handling products planning, GTM, roadmap, promo…etc.

Most importantly, the decision I made with my supervisor and colleagues, we are taking full responsibility without excuses, budget and performance are records that will bind with you.

💡 Leading Interns

I used to be an intern, learn by doing, however, now I am a role model to them. What I do, How I do, Why I do, When I do, Where I do, these factors will determine how the new onboarding interns learn and contribute throughout this internship year in Microsoft.

I still building and stacking up my skills, my three key indexes that I want to achieve are:

  1. Learn with the Interns. Share the learnings.
  2. Gapless communication with Interns
  3. As a mentor, As a friend. Admit the mistakes I might have as well.

💡 Structurelized and Framework

The difference between Intern and Manager, a student intern, your contribution has ambiguity is tolerable, but as a manager, it is not a tolerable situation under the performance of a manager. Also, being considerate, not careless is important too.

Sensing the changes quickly and responding wisely will be key criteria this year as a fresh manager in my career.
